James supports local solutions for sustainable energy policies
James Arbuthnot, Member of Parliament for North East Hampshire has given his support this week to fellow MP, Alan Simpson (Nottingham South) by signing an Early Day Motion (EDM 592), which signals support for the cross-party sponsored Sustainable Energy (Local Action) Bill.
The Sustainable Energy (Local Action) Bill recognises the vital importance of involving, rather than instructing people, communities and local authorities in efforts to combat climate change. It aims to facilitate much greater involvement by local communities and councils in the development and promotion of sustainable energy policies, with objectives focused on helping combat climate change, protect energy security and alleviate fuel poverty.
The Bill builds on the successful model in the 2007 Sustainable Communities Act by enabling local authorities to draw up sustainable energy plans – and requiring them to do so if petitioned by 5% or more of their electorate. Councils may then request new or transferred powers to enable them to implement their plans.
To date, 154 MPs from all sides of the House have signed the EDM.
James said:
"I am very pleased to support this Early Day Motion.
"Finding local solutions to local problems is always preferable wherever possible and it’s important that communities feel that they have power in their own hands to make a real difference and improve their overall quality of life. This is especially vital in the field of climate change and sustainable energy and I am very glad to welcome this sensible, pragmatic move.
"I hope that MPs of all sides of the House will unite to get this Bill through and in doing so, help to reconnect local people with the policies which directly affect them. If in doing that, we can reinvigorate local decision-making processes at the same time, so much the better. It’s good to see common sense and combating climate change go hand in hand."
